Overview
At the edges of the town and 4km away, Ava Art Gallery was jointly established in 1965 by Late Ava Devi who was known as a brilliance of embroidery art, and Bhopal Rao Sett. This is the only art gallery of its category in Darjeeling. Inside, there is a permanent collection of sixty pieces of exquisite artwork of Ava Devi including water, oil and thread paintings. There are two special paintings one is called "Still Strong" and the other "Torture" that reflect Ava Devi's outstanding talent and skills in the field of artwork.
Japanese temple is also known as the Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist Temple. The two storied white building was built in a traditional Japanese style in the year 1972. Close to the temple is the Peace Pagoda that showcases four avatars of Lord Buddha. From the top of the Pagoda, you get a panoramic views of Darjeeling landscape including the Kanchenjunga range.
The beautiful Nepali-style Dhirdham temple is a Hindu Temple of Lord Shiva located south of the Darjeeling market center and just below the toy train railway station. It was built by Purna Bahadur Pradhan in the year 1939. The temple looks like a multi-layered pagoda from outside and resembles the Pasupatinath temple in architecture. As you enter the temple premises, you will see a white colored statue of Lord Shiva facing the temple near its entrance and surrounded by a short height concrete fence.
This form represents the five different expressions of Shiva with his universal third eye. The museum houses huge collection and specimens that include wide varieties of birds with nests and eggs, reptiles and fishes, mammals, insects and more. All these specimens are of real creatures that were captured and preserved. Lal kothi, the seat of the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council(DGHC) was once a place dedicated to Queen Bhawani Dewan Roy and originally known as ‘Gori wilas’.
Maharajah Prasad Nath Roy had build it in the likeness of a western villa and was in fact the Maharaja’s own private ‘Taj Mahal’ dedicated to his beloved wife.
